the backstory
LET'S GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER.
NON-PROFIT FOUNDER
Friends of Kisimani School is a registered 501(c)3 that supports education development in Tanzania. What started in 2011 as a grassroots effort has grown into something pretty amazing.
We started with two goals: build a public school for a neglected community, and teach in English to offer equal opportunity education. (Public primary schools teach in Swahili. Private schools teach in English. However, everyone is expected to learn in English in secondary school.)
Today, over 1,700 students each year attend what's now the #1 academically ranked school in the entire region. The community in Mkonoo village no longer has to send their youngest children on 7-11 kilometer walks to the nearest public school. What's more, our local non-profit partner, Education Progress Initiatives is poised to bring their progressive teacher trainings to nearly 2,000 teachers by 2029, doing our part to eradicate corporal punishment and share the academic success of student-centered learning.
That's impact that matters, and that our whole team is extremely proud of.
